Michael Kikukawa

Michael is a seasoned communications strategist with deep experience at the highest levels of government, spanning the White House, the Senate, and the Treasury Department.

He comes to SKDK from the office of Senator Klobuchar (D-MN) and the Senate Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, where he served as Communications Director. There, he led the Senator’s comprehensive media strategy across traditional and digital platforms and developed messaging for the Senate Democratic Caucus on health care, government funding, and tariffs.

Prior to the Senate, Michael served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Communications Advisor for Economic Messaging, where he advanced the White House’s economic communications strategy, advised the National Economic Council and Council of Economic Advisers, and synchronized messaging across key Federal departments and agencies. He previously served as a White House Assistant Press Secretary, preparing the White House Press Secretary for the daily press briefing and leading responses to the debt limit, government shutdown threats, and bank failures.

At the Treasury Department, Michael served as Spokesperson for International Affairs, briefing Secretary Janet Yellen and Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo and leading communications around the G7, G20, World Bank, international tax negotiations, and energy markets.

Michael began his career at the Democratic National Committee, where he drove rapid response to major administration and campaign announcements as part of the War Room and wrote daily talking points for more than 2,000 Democratic surrogates throughout the 2020 election cycle.

Originally from the small Hawaiian island of Molokai with roots in Alaska, Michael is a graduate of Harvard University and is based in Washington, D.C.
