Avery Cohen

Avery Cohen is an experienced communications strategist with strong ties to New York City and New York State politics.

Avery served as first deputy press secretary to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, where she was the designated, on-the-record spokesperson for the city’s health and human services portfolio during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading all communications on testing and vaccination efforts. She later served as the chief of staff at the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, where she oversaw programs to reduce gun violence and unnecessary incarceration.

Prior to her tenure in New York City government, Avery was press secretary to New York state Sen. Brad Hoylman, where she led campaigns to pass a suite of progressive legislation, including the Child Victims Act and Gender Non-Discrimination Act.

As a strong believer in the power of local government, Avery most recently worked with the Pennsylvania House Democratic Campaign Committee during their 2022 midterm cycle, which flipped a record number of state legislative seats from red to blue.
