Black Lives Matter

Over the last four years, Donald Trump has been telling white Americans they should be afraid of Black and brown Americans. The painful truth of America past and present is that Black and brown Americans are the ones who truly live in fear for their lives.

Trump and his enablers are using a heavy dose of fear at their convention to gaslight us, to make us believe that he holds no responsibility for everything happening in this country, even though it is happening under his watch – and with his prompting.

We stand with the family of Jacob Blake — and the families of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Walter Scott, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Stephon Clark, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Aubrey, George Floyd and all of the countless Black men and women who have been murdered because of the color of their skin. We await justice for Breonna Taylor, and we mourn the protesters who were gunned down in Kenosha two days ago.

Make no mistake, these latest killings are a direct result of 400 years of systemic racism in America and the last four years of Donald Trump’s failed leadership in the White House. Nothing will change if Donald Trump remains President, it will only get worse. There are 68 days until the election. 68 days to mobilize, text your friends, talk to your neighbors and ensure all of them are engaged and know how to exercise their rights.

Tonight, on the eve of the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, the 2020 Virtual March on Washington will begin at 8:00 pm ET. You can watch at 2020march.com. SKDK is proud to be the pro-bono PR firm for this event which will be counter-programming to the angry and hate-filled RNC Convention. For our DC colleagues, the in-person Commitment March, convened by Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III, will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. tomorrow at 11:00 am. We support those of you who want to take time off from work to march and protest. We encourage you to stay safe and wear masks. Virtual programming continues Friday evening at 9:00 pm on 2020march.com

The SKDK NAACP team has been hard at work on this and we are proud they represent us so well! On November 3rd, we need to vote like our lives are on the line. Because for many Americans, they are.

SKDK Launches Conference-In-A-Box Offering, Producing Every Component of Virtual Events Under One Roof

August 18, 2020 WASHINGTON, DC – As the first-ever remote political convention opens, SKDKnickerbocker today announced its new Conference-in-a-Box offering to help industry and advocacy organizations produce high-end virtual events seamlessly and under one roof.

Creating a remote conference can be an intimidating adjustment for groups that rely on annual meetings for networking, fundraising and getting important business done – but there’s a way to do it right. SKDK, the 2019 Holmes Report North American Public Affairs Agency of the Year, has expertise in every component of a successful event: crafting polished keynote speeches and compelling bylined content, producing award-winning videos and creative digital assets, preparing speakers for panels and presentations, and developing the earned- and social-media strategies that keep messages echoing long after the last speaker’s closing words.

SKDK has penned speeches for U.S. Presidents and Fortune 100 CEOs, produced television ads that aired during the Super Bowl, and prepared presenters for conferences like TED, South by Southwest, the World Economic Forum, and nationally televised political conventions.

“Moving an entire conference online requires more than a webcam and a slide deck,” said SKDK Managing Director and Head of Executive Communications Stephen Krupin. “It takes careful consideration of your message, your messengers and the interactivity that keeps an audience engaged. Conventions as we know them might be over, but convening isn’t. Even in these physically distant days, the right content and creativity can bring people together to do big things.”

SKDK’s Conference-in-a-Box services include:

·       MESSAGE DEVELOPMENT. We’ll work with you to develop a strategic, compelling and meaningful message for your event – and then reinforce it clearly and consistently with each element of the program.

·       AGENDA DESIGN. The best conferences put the attendees first. We understand how to balance speeches, panels, breakout groups and interactive networking sessions to keep energy high and audiences engaged.

·       SPEECHWRITING. We know what moves an audience. Like we’ve done for some of the biggest names in business and politics, including President Obama, we’ll work directly with your speakers to conceptualize, research and write remarks that are persuasive, memorable and timely – and that together create a cohesive overall program.

·       SPEAKER PREP. Whether your speakers are experienced orators or nervous rookies, we’ll work with them to nail the delivery of their prepared keynotes, presentation, panel appearance, or interview.

·       VIDEO PRODUCTION. Our in-house Content Studio brings years of experience creating award-winning, visually compelling creative that tells an unforgettable story.

·       DIGITAL STORYTELLING. From graphics to slides to a dedicated microsite that houses all your conference materials, we’ll produce the multimedia content that will keep your audience tuned in across every platform.

·       BYLINED CONTENT. At a virtual conference, it’s sometimes best to let your attendees absorb information at their own pace and on their own time, before or after a session or during a break. We’ll help you craft the letters, articles, graphs and white papers that round out the story you need to tell.

·       SOCIAL MEDIA. We bring strategic expertise across digital and social channels to make sure your event and its message captures attention and drives results. Our monitoring, research and insights will help you define the right approach to amplify your conference and keep you in the conversation.

·       MEDIA RELATIONS. Year after year, our team of public relations professionals have won the highest honors in our field. We know how to break through in a noisy news cycle, we know the players at national and regional media across all platforms, and we know how to deliver the right messages to the right audiences to get results.

·       TALENT RELATIONS. Have you invited a special guest to speak? We’ve been on both ends of those sometimes-sensitive conversations, so we know how to make sure they deliver what you’re looking for. With our deep network of leaders and experts, we can also help you book engaging keynote speakers.

·       CROWD-BUILDING. We can create and disseminate invitations to your attendees and stakeholders, including targeted media, and promote your event through strategic digital marketing.

·       DAY-OF-SHOW. Once everyone logs in, you should be able to sit back and watch the show. You can find us in the virtual backstage, getting your speakers ready, keeping the program moving, and handling any last-minute tech hiccups. We are fluent in every video platform technology.

·      STORIES THAT LIVE ON. The power of a thoughtfully planned event is that it responds to a moment in time. The risk is that its echo might not resonate much longer than the last speaker’s closing words. We build evergreen content so the story your event communicates remains relevant and continues to be told.

Statement on Life and Legacy of the Honorable John Lewis

Today SKDK honors the life and mourns the loss of civil rights legend and American hero, Congressman John Lewis. Our country has lost one of its greatest champions for civil and human rights and a true drum major for justice. He was a great leader who put his life and body on the line so that America could live up to her ideals. He inspired many of us and generations of Americans to get into “good trouble, necessary trouble” to ensure that equality, dignity, and respect were not reserved for the few but a reality for all.

There is an enormous debt owed to Congressman John Lewis. His example of courage, compassion, and commitment to racial equity and social justice is just as powerful today as in 1965 on a bridge in Selma, Alabama, when he almost lost his life in the cause of freedom and justice.

Congressman Lewis’ legacy continues in those who are protesting social justice today. His life is a testament to what is possible, and his work is a blueprint for hope and how to hold America to the tenets of the promises of its constitution and laws.

SKDKnickerbocker Expands Healthcare Practice

Nation’s Leading Public Affairs Firm Grows Practice Building off Decades of Successful Healthcare Campaigns and Expertise; Including Recently Helping Lead Multiple Healthcare System Responses to COVID-19

July 8, 2020 (New York, NY) – SKDKnickerbocker (SKDK), the 2019 Holmes Report North American Public Affairs Agency of the Year, today announced the expansion of its practice division dedicated to communications leadership across the medical, bioscience, and pharmaceutical industries. The Healthcare Practice continues to leverage SKDK’s decades of experience and expertise to manage high-stakes healthcare campaigns, deliver media relations support, and implement thought leadership initiatives for partners in every segment – from hospitals, to healthcare startups, to labor unions.

In recent months, SKDK has been at the forefront of helping major healthcare systems and companies – including Mount Sinai Health System, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and SOMOS Community Care – navigate and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, SKDK worked with the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) to create an advertising campaign aimed at bringing patients back to hospitals following the COVID pandemic in New York. Working hand-in-hand with each organization, SKDK’s communications leaders helped guide strategy and provide tactical support for internal and external crisis response.

Healthcare organizations are increasingly dependent on digital communication and virtual access to healthcare information. In addition to expanding the healthcare PR team, SKDK has added digital capabilities and developed specialized advertising campaigns to address these new needs.

“Now more than ever, healthcare has become one of the most important and defining issues of our time, but also one of the most contentious,” said Loren Riegelhaupt, President of New York Public Affairs and Managing Director. “Healthcare companies need an experienced communications partner that can provide timely counsel on crucial issues and move quickly to deliver information. Our work on COVID-19 and many other vital healthcare issues nationwide, has created a need to expand our practice with greater resources and new innovative ways to assist healthcare professionals in this fraught environment.”

Combining expertise and strategic insight, the Healthcare Practice has the depth of understanding and vast knowledge to help any healthcare client – unions, patient groups, national hospital systems, academic institutions, issue advocacy groups, biotech startups, and digital health companies – to navigate and thrive in today’s ever-changing landscape.

“We are seeing the massive implications to people’s lives and every aspect of our economy from policy decisions related to healthcare,” said Meaghan Rose Smith, Senior Vice President in SKDK’s Washington, D.C., public affairs practice. “SKDK’s strategists intuitively understand how to navigate these issues after our extensive work inside the halls of Congress and state Capitols shaping policy as well as implementing successful campaigns from the outside.”

Today’s announcement builds on SKDK’s portfolio of specialized divisions of expertise including the Litigation, Regulation and Investigation and Foundations and Philanthropy practices. For more information on the healthcare practice, please visit: www.skdknick.com/our-services/healthcare

Statement from SKDK on the Day of Memorial to George Floyd

Today is the Memorial Service to honor the life of George Floyd and to remember the lives of all of those who have died at the hands of police brutality brought on by systemic racism. This is also a day to recommit to ourselves and to each other that George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others whose names we will never know did not die in vain. The brutality they faced at the hands of those who have sworn to serve and protect is all too emblematic of the consistent erasing of humanity that African Americans confront every day. Combatting racism cannot be partisan, parsed for comfort or dismissed as a part of the past. Let today’s service be – not another, but a final – call to America that change must happen now and that these incidents cannot be filed away as just another abuse of power that will be soon forgotten.

Over the last several months we have watched as this horrible COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately ravaged communities of color. SKDK teams have been supporting healthcare workers and caregivers as the pandemic raged and we have seen, up close, how the majority of those who have died from COVID-19 have been people of color who have had the least access to consistent, affordable healthcare. Make no mistake, by allowing this we, as Americans, are saying some lives matter more than others.

We stand in solidarity with the peaceful protests across all 50 states by people of good will and determination. And we stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues at SKDK for the incredible pain, anger and frustration they and their families are experiencing right now. We are proud of them and our team members who have marched in allegiance against racial injustice.

White Americans, including our allies, must open their eyes to the hard truth that Black Americans live with every day: Racism permeates every aspect of our society. There are no safe spaces, and destroying this disease is the only way this country will realize its true greatness.

When President Trump, who regularly traffics in racism and bigotry, encourages violence and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators we know we have a painfully long way to go in this country for justice, opportunity and equality.

SKDK has been serving clients in the social services, criminal justice and policing reform space for years. But we must do more and are committed to doing more as a firm. We counsel our clients not to make empty promises in defining moments. And neither will we.

We pledge to re-dedicate ourselves with our resources and skills to be of service to the causes and leaders who will help rid our country of the systemic racism that denies dignity to those most deserving.

We pledge to work harder to change the elected leadership of this country and to assure that a new President has allies to help him implement systemic change where only governments can act.

We pledge to every member of the SKDK family that we’ve got their backs during this incredibly difficult and challenging time. But more than that, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing an equitable environment where people are not just present but belong. May the memory of George Floyd be what drives our thoughts and prayers today and may the promise of a better future be what drives our actions tomorrow and forward.

Julia Sherman, Political Writer: Prior to joining SKDK’s political team, Julia worked on Cory Booker’s 2020 presidential campaign in Des Moines, Iowa and Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate race in Houston, Texas. Before transitioning into politics, she spent several years in Los Angeles and New York, working in film and television development with Cutler Productions at 21st Century Fox and CBS.

Amber Gannt, Associate/EA: Before joining SKDK, Amber interned at Forbes Tate Partners, BerlinRosen, and the Democratic National Committee, where she gained experience in public advocacy, public affairs, and voter outreach.
